Car in Snow - What to put in a Winter Car Safety Kit

During major storms and heavy traffic, winter car kits are a great resource to keep in your vehicle. We have some fantastic options in our AAA Minneapolis Travel Stores, and you can add to it with items you already have on hand!

First Aid Kit

Band-Aids, gauze, safety pins and adhesive tape, among other personal care items, can all come in handy and have multiple uses.

Phone Charger

While it’s important not to use your phone while driving, should you ever get stuck in bad weather or have an emergency, the last thing you want is a phone with a dead battery.

Flashlight

If your phone battery is dead and you need to see at night or get attention from others, this is an essential tool to have on hand.

Clothing

Make sure you have dry, warm layers to put on, such as hats, gloves, scarves, sweats or blankets/towels.

Notepad and Pen

You might need to write down names, phone numbers or instructions when you call for help.

Food

Granola bars, chocolate (Snickers is a good choice, containing both sugar and nuts for energy), mixed nuts and an un-opened package of jerky provide protein and energy and don’t expire quickly.

Water Bottle

If you have a metal water bottle, you can melt snow in the bottle to drink—just don’t drink too much at once or you will bring down your body temp.

Mini Shovel and Sand/Salt

Use your shovel to clear the snow by your wheels and spread sand, salt or kitty litter to dry up the area and give you traction. You can also try putting down towels or blankets.

Candle and Lighter

A lit candle in a votive gives off a surprisingly large amount of warmth when in a small, enclosed space.

Don't Forget Vehicle Maintenance

All of these items are good to have in your car, but it’s also important to keep your car in good shape. Throughout the winter, make sure to always keep your gas tank at least half full and regularly check your tire pressure and windshield wiper fluid levels.
